Meet My New Buddy Seasick Steve

12712637It’s just been one of those weeks. Things aren’t going quite according to plan and you find yourself staring out windows at the gathering storm wandering where it all went wrong.

You’re not alone brother. The Tiger’s also been feelin’ a little in the dumps lately but the good news is that this too shall pass, and while we’re fighting the good fight and waiting for that moment to come, I say let’s hang out with my new buddy Seasick Steve.

See, ol’ Seasick knows how bad things can get, before he made it he used to busk in the Paris Metro, only finding fame in his late fifties.

This guy is the real deal, from his frazzled grey soup-catcher to his beaten up John Deere cap and dungarees, he is everything that is badass about old-school blues.

He has a voice like an old grizzly bear and can change it up from the low, lonely, slit-your-wrists ballad I’m about to play you to foot-stompin, redneck country and western tracks that bring words like “yeee-haw!” and “hootenanny!” to mind.

I just think he’s fucking cool. I’ve got a soft spot for old veterans like my pal Seasick. He attributes his recent success to his cheap and weather-beaten guitar “The Trance Wonder” which he bought off a friend of his in Mississippi who later revealed to Seasick that it was haunted.

Get his album You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks if you dig this track. It’s the opener and by far the most gut-wrenching track on the album. The rest are a lot more upbeat and there’s even an entire track dedicated to whisky (So. Bad. Ass).

This one’s called “Treasures”.

A Song You Probably Havent Heard In 10 Years

Babylon Zoo - The Boy With The X-Ray EyesBack in the 90s (as with any decade I guess) there were some bands that released killer tracks and then just as quickly faded into complete obscurity, only to surface again at the most random times in our lives.

It’s 3am and you’re listening to Cradock FM and the next thing you know, “Spaceman” by Babylon Zoo starts blasting through the speakers. Remember that one? Christ, giving away my age here…

Anyway, I’ve made it my mission to track down some of the songs that really meant something to me that have since vanished into thin air and this is one of them.

The band is called Dishwalla, which sounds completely random right? Wrong, “Dishwalla” is a Hindi word. Meaning it must have some higher significance, some mystical relevance right? Wrong, it’s what they call people who “provide cable television” (?).

Anyway, back in 1996 they had some moderate success with a song that started randomly playing in my head a couple of days back, just snatches at first, then enough lyrics to do a quick Google search and track the band down and bada bing bada bang! Here it is Winking smile

The song’s called “Counting The Blue Cars” and goes like this…

For me, it reminds me of a winter I spent with my cousins in Natal when it snowed. I couldn’t have been much older than 12, but I’ll never forget how the world looked when we woke up that morning and everything around us was covered in a soft white blanket of snow.

Later that day we missioned outside to make snowmen and ended up wandering all over my cousin’s farm to find where the most snow had fallen so we could build snowmen like Calvin.

We eventually wandered so far from home, it was easier to call from the local pub than it was to walk all the way back, so we did and my cousin’s older sister picked us up in her car and this song was playing.

Crazy how vividly this song brings that all back.

That’s the power of music I guess, and the reason why I can’t live without it.

You Need To Get Into This Band

blood_red_shoes2A good buddy of mine flew in from Scotland this past weekend, goes by the name of Ricky T.

He’s one of the oldest friends I have (we go back nearly twenty years) and the man has impeccable taste in music so if he recommends a band, I’m on it like white on rice.

So when he told me to check out Blood Red Shoes I bought both their albums straight up and man! You gotta hit the “read full post” link to hear this band…

I guess you’d call it underground alternative/punk with a nice grungey flavour. It’s definitely not indie, which is a refreshing change from most bands these days that all seem to play some variation of that genre. Vocal duties are shared between frontlady and guitarist Laura-Mary Carter and drummer Steven Ansell who pretty much make up the band.

What’s seriously impressive is the fact that Carter’s jams are tastier than she is which is saying a lot because a) just look at her, she’s a total hottie! And b) a girl?!? Playing guitar?!?

Look, don’t get me wrong, I’m well aware that girls can play the guitar (sort of), but not like this. The things this lady can do with an axe turn my legs to jelly. It’s beautiful, really, it’s like watching Cinderella punch a swan.

To perfectly demonstrate what I’m talking about, here’s a track called “Heartsink” off their second album Fire like This for you to sink your teeth into.

Just fucking dig that crunchy, blunt-force tone in the chorous, FUCK YEAH! BEEYATIFUL!

Go get both their albums right now, Box Of Secrets and Fire Like This and don’t thank me.

Thank Ricky T Winking smile
